2024 Tax Update
Our Tax Update includes a comprehensive review of the tax changes affecting both individuals and organizations. We will also discuss possible changes on the horizon with new tax legislation and regulatory guidance.
The Tax Update will be delivered as a series of two virtual sessions covering distinct information. To gain the full benefit, you are encouraged to attend both sessions.
Session 1

- Investigate the status of IRS operations, discuss the Employee Retention Credit (ERC), and provide other relevant updates.
- Examine relevant year-end compensation and benefit planning topics.
- Discuss year-end payroll tax reporting reminders.

Joe Kristan, CPA, Partner
After 38 years working on tax consulting for closely held businesses and their owners, Joe joined Eide Bailly's National Tax Office. Joe's responsibilities include communication, process improvement, and training. Joe is a member of the AICPA Tax Section and Iowa Society of Public Accountants.
Ben Peeler, J.D., CPA, LL.M., Partner/IRS Tax Controversy Practice Leader
Ben joined the firm early in 2014 with many years of tax experience, both as an attorney and an accountant. He specializes in federal tax, controversy, and procedure work, assisting clients in the areas of income tax, estate and gift tax, property tax, sales and use tax, estate planning, and many other tax matters.
Judy Hensley, Ph.D., J.D., Principal/Compensation & Benefits Tax Practice Leader
Judy helps employers navigate the tax and ERISA aspects of structuring, designing, and administering their benefits and compensation arrangements. This includes equity-based compensation, pension plans, non-qualified deferred compensation, health and welfare plans, and other benefit programs. She also helps plan sponsors and Boards of Trustees understand and comply with their fiduciary obligations.
Angie Ziegler, CPP, Principal/Outsourced and Managed Services
Angie has more than 20 years of accounting experience for large and small businesses in a variety of industries. She and her team provide payroll processing and compliance reporting services, prepare and file payroll tax returns, and provide guidance for businesses on day-to-day payroll activities, federal and state notices, garnishments, and tax updates.

- Investigate current legislation and potential changes with the expiration of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) at the end of 2025.
- Explore key planning and compliance issues affecting partnerships and owners.
- Discuss pending tax law changes and planning strategies related to Wealth Transition Services (WTS).
- Summarize changes to research and experimental costs under IRC Sec. 174.
- Examine updates to digital asset reporting and review casualty loss and involuntary conversion rules.
Presenters:
Mel Schwarz, J.D., CPA, Director of Legislative Affairs
Mel serves as Director of Tax Legislative Affairs in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office, where he focuses on the implementation of recent tax legislation. He has 40 years of experience in the world of tax legislation in Washington, D.C., including six years spent on the staff of the Joint Committee of Taxation. He is a past chairman of the Tax Legislation Committee of the AICPA and a sought-after speaker for AICPA, TEI, and FEI conferences.
Adam Sweet, J.D., LL.M., Principal/Passthrough Entity Consulting Practice Leader
Adam leads Eide Bailly's Passthrough Entity Consulting group. He has extensive knowledge in the area of partnership tax, including interpreting partnership agreements, allocation and distribution provisions, and issuing compensatory equity. He is also experienced with both the buying and selling sides of domestic and foreign joint ventures, tax credit partnerships, as well as a variety of IRS controversy matters.
Devin Hecht, J.D., LL.M., Principal/Wealth Transition Services Practice Leader
Prior to joining Eide Bailly, Devin worked as a tax attorney and partner in the Tax, Trusts and Estates practice group of a regional law firm. At Eide Bailly, he assists clients in the area of estate planning and advisory services in estate and gift tax, generation-skipping transfer tax, income tax, and other tax matters.
Jim Donovan, CPA, Partner/R&D Tax Incentives Practice Leader
Jim has more than 20 years of experience helping clients benefit from federal and state incentives. Jim oversees the Employee Retention Credit and R&D tax credit practices and assists clients in sustaining their credits if examined by a federal or state authority. Jim has authored articles on tax incentives and actively presents on business credits and incentives at conferences and webinars.
Andrea Mouw, J.D., CPA, Partner/Accounting Methods and Periods Practice Leader
Andrea has more than 13 years of experience providing tax consulting and advisory services to diverse clients. Her primary area of focus is accounting methods, including income and expense recognition, inventory, capitalization, and cost recovery. She also assists clients in filing accounting method change requests (Form 3115) and advises on issues related to the TCJA, including section 163(j), section 168(k), and small taxpayer accounting method opportunities as well as issues related to virtual currency and debt instruments and modifications.
