Event Overview
This workshop is the first in a two-part series focused on year-end closing procedures for California K-12 public schools. While the Foundational and Advanced workshops are designed to complement one another, they contain minimal overlapping content. Previously offered as a full-day, in-person event, the series has been divided into two workshops to allow for deeper exploration of key concepts. Both sessions provide valuable insights for professionals at all experience levels — from those new to school accounting to seasoned practitioners seeking a refresher.
The Foundational workshop emphasizes the principle that “every day is year-end closing.” Participants will learn how accurate day-to-day processing of payroll, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and cash collections can simplify the year-end close. By building a strong understanding of routine accounting transactions, attendees can reduce the complexity of closing the books and focus on higher-level financial reporting and compliance requirements.

- Describe every account balance on the income statement and balance sheet and how they relate to the financial statements as a whole.
- Recall the cycle of work and how best to prepare every day for this “once a year” event.
- Identify the California Department of Education state, cloud-based software and how to use it.
