Biden to nominate new IRS chief

November 10, 2022

President Joe Biden is expected to nominate Danny Werfel to be the next IRS Commissioner.

The nomination comes as the current IRS Commissioner, Charles Rettig, is scheduled to retire on November 12th. Douglas O’Donnell has been named Acting IRS Commissioner and will head the agency after Rettig’s term ends.

The role of permanent IRS Commissioner, i.e., Werfel, must by confirmed by Congress. Lawmakers are expected to return to Capitol Hill on November 14th and possibly stay in session until mid-December. A confirmation process could occur during this time period so Werfel could be in the position at the beginning of next year.

Werfel is currently with Boston Consulting Group, a global consulting firm. He also a former IRS acting administrator when President Barack Obama was in the White House.
