Derek's primary focus is in the government and utility industry, where he coordinates and supervises Uniform Guidance audit services to governments and nonprofit organizations. As Department Head of the Fargo office's Audit Department, Derek plays an active leadership role in developing talent, promoting audit quality, and fostering collaboration among team members. He is passionate about mentoring professionals at all levels of their careers and helping them reach their full potential. He believes that strong relationships, open communication, and a supportive culture are critical to delivering exceptional client service and building successful teams.

Derek takes pride in being a trusted advisor who goes beyond the audit process to help clients identify opportunities, address challenges, and achieve their long-term objectives. Whether working with elected officials, governing boards, management teams, or staff members, he is committed to delivering high-quality service and practical recommendations that add value. Outside of work, Derek enjoys spending time with his wife, Jenica, and their three children. Family time is important to the Flanagans; they spend as much time as possible with extended family and friends. Derek also enjoys golfing and attending any major sporting event.
