Top 10 Things Every College Student Should Do This Summer

1. Add a new skill to your resume. Adding an additional skillset to your resume not only may impress future employers, but it may also increase your marketability, which might just be what you need to have your resume chosen over someone else’s.

2. Get involved! Whether it’s a one-time happening or a year-round opportunity, expanding your circle of influence is always beneficial. By growing new relationships, you experience things beyond your current areas of expertise and increase your connections with a more diverse set of people, which may accelerate your ability to grow as a leader.

3. Email your professors. After finals, take the time to send out a few thank you emails to your professors. Think about it: your professors are all industry professionals, have extensive knowledge of potential careers, and can even be your connection to a future job, so why not send them an email this summer?

4. Get social. With crazy school year schedules, its not always easy to find the time to connect with potential employers. Take a moment to follow, like, share and comment on your favorite social channel. Employers are watching this, so don’t be shy; say hello!

5. Read a book. Reading a good book is like being around an inspiring person: it can make you feel contagious passion and find desire to be your best self. Reading can also reduce your stress, challenge your imagination, increase your knowledge and even enhance a skillset.

6. Make a vision board or a bucket list. Take time to think about how you want your life to look, then—in whatever way you choose—create a visual reminder to help keep you focused and motivated.

7. Listen to a podcast. Did you know narrative stories can stimulate multiple parts of your brain? It’s true! Podcasts allow us to become a part of what we’re listening to and use our imagination to form pictures of the story. And, like we learned in kindergarten, listening is super important! Our newest podcast, EB and Flow, is a great way to learn more about the business landscape.

8. Practice self-care. The pressures of college can stress anyone out. Making your well-being a priority in this way can help pave the way for continued success in your educational journey and beyond.

9. Take a road trip! Maybe you can do it on the way home for the summer and hit your college friends’ hometowns, or maybe you can plan a trip with your friends from high school to reacquaint yourselves after spending so much time apart. The experience of travel helps to build confidence and self-sufficiency and can even build your cultural awareness.

10. Get moving. Studying for finals can be brutal. Late-night pizza, stress-eating snacks and cramming for the big exam can make it difficult to find time for exercise. Try plugging in your headphones and going for a walk or a jog to clear your head and get your heart pumping. Exercise combats all kinds of things including anxiety, depression, and improves your overall mood and sense of well-being. Up for something more intense? Join a nearby gym or virtual fitness class.
