Shortly after 1:30 a.m. today, the death knell sounded in Washington D.C. on the efforts of the Republicans to repeal the Affordable Care Act, generally referred to as Obamacare.
The 48 Democrat Senators cast 48 "no" votes and were joined by three Republicans casting "no" votes to defeat the final Republican Senate leadership offering of a "skinny repeal" of Obamacare.
As a result, there is not much more to be said, other than, nothing has changed related to the current healthcare law; Obamacare is still the healthcare law to be followed.
Tax Reform Next?
The House of Representatives and the Senate should now be able to move forward with the debate on tax reform. But, it is hard to imagine that the Obamacare repeal defeat suffered by the Republicans will not change their design of, and reduce expectations for, tax reform. Why? Because, even with majority voting numbers held in the House and the Senate, they now know there is no sure thing when a vote comes.
